Nevada attorney general investigating Las Vegas shooting charity scams

CARSON CITY — Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s office is investigating charity scammers in the aftermath of the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas.

Laxalt said Monday his office has shut down a fraudulent Facebook page and is investigating other complaints about false websites soliciting donations.

“There continue to be sham charities and websites seeking to profit from this horrific tragedy,” Laxalt said in a statement. “Complaints from local consumers continue to be the best source of information for our Bureau of Consumer Protection in investigating claims of misrepresentation.”

His office offers the following guidelines:

— Do not make donations in cash or through wire transfers.

— Ask for the name, address and telephone number of the website organizer.

— Do not make checks payable to individuals. Don’t give out credit card, bank account or Social Security numbers.

— Be cautious of social media tools used to raise money.

— Be wary of sound-alike names.
