Atlantic City casinos seek workers. And casino workers seek better pay
As New Jerseyans try to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the struggle to get a job remains a reality for some. Job seekers who attended a job fair Thursday in Atlantic City are hoping a visit to one of the employers present will help turn things around, especially as casino owners deal with a growing labor shortage. Jennifer Aarons of Stockton University’s hospitality, tourism and event management program, says about 26,000 people were working in the casino industry in February 2020 but that number is now down to about 22,000.
Some current casino workers say there are major issues with how employees in the industry are treated. Members of the UNITE HERE Local 54 picketed outside the Tropicana casino on Wednesday to highlight the failure so far to reach better terms with casinos as their contracts expired just after midnight Wednesday.
“Overworked, underpaid, we’re forced to work overtime a lot of times … because there’s not enough people to cover the shifts. And that affects us at home a lot. I still have three kids living at home with me and we just want to be able to survive. It’s hard with rent, food, bills,” said Janey Negron, a bartender at the Tropicana and member of Local 54.
