MARIJUANA -- you can buy it, smoke it, give it to a friend. But you can't grow it.
ALCOHOL -- you can buy it, drink it, give it to a friend AND you can brew, ferment or distill your own.
Can somebody explain?

1. You can grow in Virginia
2 or 4 plants - I forget which. The plants do have to be tagged with your name on it though.

2. The explanation is pretty simple
Do you really not understand why the various MJ legalization state laws don't let you grow it? The bills are written and lobbied by large MJ financial interests to protect their turf. States are principally looking for a tax windfall. Because growing MJ is a hell of a lot easier than brewing beer or making wine, a lot more people would simply do that and not pay the tax. It took a federal law to legalizing making your own wine and beer, and no you are not allowed to "distill" any spirits. Don't know where you got that last part. You can only brew and ferment. If you distill, you are going to jail. |

8. That is what I realized several years ago in CA.
The taxes on legal weed are really, really high. The city, state, etc all get their cut. It is cheaper to buy it illegally. If you want oil, vapes or other varieties besides flowers/buds you pay the price.

3. You're allowed to grow pot...
where I live if you have an MML (we don't have recreational yet.)
So my explanation is that you are dead wrong. |

10. This is the New Jersey forum
See this up above your post:
![]() The idea is that DU has a number of state-specific forums where people can talk about state-specific issues. This forum is for "New Jersey". So, in the context of a post discussing marijuana law - which is different in various states - the assumed context in the New Jersey forum is that we are talking about New Jersey. Now, New Jersey is also known as "The Garden State". But if you have marijuana in your garden in New Jersey, you are going to the pokey. |

4. We are allowed so many plants for personal use in Canada, can't imagine why they can't
The only thing different here is that if you are attending an event, you can only carry government stamped MJ into the event, not baggies or anything.

5. I grow both Cannabis
and CBD Hemp... no problem
just as an aside... https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jan/29/marijuana-name-cannabis-racism "....Today “cannabis” and “marijuana” are terms used more or less interchangeably in the industry, but a vocal contingent prefers the less historically fraught “cannabis”. At a time of intense interest in past injustices, some say “marijuana” is a racist word that should fall out of use. Harborside, which is among the oldest and largest dispensaries in California, says on its website: “‘Marijuana’ has come to be associated with the idea that cannabis is a dangerous and addictive intoxicant, not a holistic, herbal medicine ... This stigma has played a big part in stymying cannabis legalization efforts throughout the US.”.... |

7. ---as long as you don't sell it. ---- side story --- this was about 70 years ago.
My grandmother's friend (also my cousin's grandfather) had a still during the depression. Once a month, a Cadillac would pull up in front of the house. "Grandpa" would get in and come back several hours later with a wad of cash.
--- now, fast forward to the 1950's. Bootlegging is over but now Grandma runs the still. She would make bottles of Christmas sprit for her friends. Anisette was one. Another one was yellow and sweet. I liked both of them So I was given a pint of each, every Christmas. I WAS 10 YEARS OLD when this started and continued until she died. |

9. No you can't
There is a federal law to the effect that you can make up to 50 gallons of wine or beer for non-commercial, personal use per year.
Nowhere can you distill spirits for drinking purposes legally, absent a license. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_distilled_spirits In 2013, the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control issued its first distillery license in 94 years (since instituting Prohibition), to Jersey Artisan Distilling, based in Fairfield, in Essex County. |
