Ex-New Mexico high court justice, MALDEF co-founder Dan Sosa Jr. dies

LAS CRUCES - Dan Sosa Jr., a former New Mexico Supreme Court justice, died Sunday after a lengthy illness in the adobe house where he was born, at 326 N. San Pedro St. in Las Cruces. The house was built by his grandfather in the 1860s. He was 92.

"We didn't have any hospitals, so the doctors delivered you at home then," said Sosa, of his birth, in a 2006 interview with New Mexico State University. "... I was born in the barrio, about a block and a half from (the former Las Cruces) City Hall."

Sosa attended public schools in Las Cruces, at the former Lucero Elementary School, where Branigan Memorial Library is now located, and he graduated in 1941 from Las Cruces Union High School. In high school, Sosa played on the basketball team that won the 1941 state championship, the first state title won by a Las Cruces school.

Sosa said he always knew he would go to college, but wasn't sure what he would major in. He attended New Mexico A&M and graduated in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Sosa said he took an aptitude test that showed he had skills in music, law and salesmanship.
