Mayfield High in Las Cruces, N.M., will go remote following 'secret prom;' investigation underway

LAS CRUCES - Mayfield High School will switch to remote learning for 10 days beginning Friday, April 16 while Las Cruces Public Schools investigates a so-called "secret prom" held Saturday. The closure of the school building extends through Monday, April 26. District officials say the switch to remote learning is to mitigate any potential spread of COVID-19 and comes under advisement from state education and health officials.

Students who attended could face repercussions ranging from academic suspensions to being barred from attending future school events such as graduation, according to Kelly Jameson, the district's spokesperson. "We understand that students have certainly missed out on an awful lot this last year," Jameson said to the Sun-News. "But anything that threatens their own safety and welfare is something that could potentially impact others, and the district sees that as irresponsible at this point."

A complaint filed with the governor’s office alleged "potentially hundreds of students from Mayfield High School" attended the prom, according to a news release from the district. The event was not sanctioned by Mayfield High School or LCPS and did not happen during school hours, the release stated.

LCPS interim Superintendent Ralph Ramos said the alleged incident contradicts efforts the district has taken to ensure safety among school populations. “Irresponsible out-of-school activities have a tremendous impact on our health status in Doña Ana County,” said Ramos in the district's news release. “We have worked tirelessly to stay in compliance with public health orders to get our students back in the classroom. We’ve advocated for vaccinations, efforts for increased COVID-19 testing, and anything else that essentially gets our county to green. Violating the order against mass gatherings is a disappointing disruption to those efforts.”

1. Chances are parents are involved in this...

Which means the school will face intense backlash if they go too hard against students.

4. no 'chances are' about it

and also correct about public backlash. Expect to hear plenty about "good students, good kids."

("good kids" imbued with "f*ck you -- can't make me" attitude from home)

2. Good decision by the school district

The selfish parents and students who organized and attended the secret prom have no regard for the safety of teachers, school workers and other students.
