Espaillat picks up another East Harlem endorsement

By Azi Paybarah

After supporting Rep. Charlie Rangel for re-election two years ago, Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez of East Harlem today endorsed Rangel’s leading challenger, State Senator Adriano Espaillat.

Standing with Espaillat in front of the Taft Houses on Madison Avenue, Rodgriguez explained why, after 40 years of being represented by Rangel, the area needs a change.

“The principle difference is the time horizons that are being considered in terms of the changes that are necessary for our community,” he said, referring to initiatives like boosting funding for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. “The changes that we’re thinking about … are not going to be solved in two years. It’s something that’s going to take five to 10, and I think that’s a change we have to begin making today.”

A Democratic district leader who filed a police report claiming she was harassed by a campaigner worker for Adriano Espaillat said on Wednesday she wants that aide to resign.

The district leader, Peggy Morales, is supporting the re-election campaign of Rep. Charlie Rangel, who is being challenged by Espaillat in the June 24 Democratic primary.

“What they did was unconscionable. I was vulnerable. I felt assaulted, verbally. I was threatened,” Morales said at a press conference on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday.

Morales told police she was confronted by Espaillat’s campaign manager while at a park with her children. I asked Morales if she was surprised that such a confrontation would take place in broad daylight, within sight of so many people?
