CELESTE KATZ

A City Council bill would hand the new NYPD inspector general his first task: tracking the thousands of lawsuits filed against city cops.

The bill would require the IG to publish four reports a year detailing how many suits are filed against the department, what complaints plaintiffs are making, how much the city pays out in judgments and settlements, and which cops and precincts are getting hit with lawsuits.

After passing legislation last year to establish the first-ever inspector general for the New York Police Department, city lawmakers are now pushing to have the new I.G. file quarterly reports about complaints against the department.

But Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration is looking to delay passage of the bill, warning they are understaffed, underfunded and that some of the statistics could be misinterpreted.

If the bill passed, as is, it would require “significant, expensive reprogramming of the software application used by our office to track cases and other matters,” said Celeste Koeleveld, the executive assistant corporation counsel for public safety at the Law Department, at a hearing of the Council's Committee on Oversight and Investigations.
