NYS Senate Dems propose outlawing use of campaign funds on legal fees as part of ethics reform package

State Senate Dems want to bar lawmakers from using their campaign accounts to pay for defense lawyers.

Part of a nine-bill package to be unveiled Tuesday, the legislation would outlaw campaign funds from covering legal fees associated with any criminal or civil prosecution of alleged violations of state or federal law.

The renewed push comes amid an investigation by the Manhattan U.S. Attorney of potential ethical wrongdoing by lawmakers.
