City Council Passes NYPD Oversight Bills


The City Council early this morning approved the most far-reaching plans in years to expand oversight of the police department and is being met with an immediate rebuttal from City Hall.

In a session that stretched into the early morning hours, the Council passed the Community Safety Act.

The measure contains two separate bills.

The first creates an inspector general, who would have subpoena power to investigate and recommend changes to the department.

The second bill makes it easier to bring racial profiling claims in state court to seek policy changes to the NYPD

1. Note that the NYPD is facing Federal monitoring over stop and frisk policies...
