Proposal would reimburse counties for primary elections passed Elections Committee

By MATTHEW DONDIEGO

The Senate Elections Committee has passed a bill that would reimburse local governments for the costs of additional primary elections.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk, counters the Legislature's failure to consolidate state and federal primary elections, which Tkaczyk's office says costs taxpayers up to $50 million every election season.

"This is common sense legislation that would provide real mandate relief for our local governments and property tax relief for homeowners," the Duanesburg-area senator said. "I am thankful that my colleagues in the Elections Committee supported the bill and I trust that it will be considered and passed quickly by the Finance Committee as well."
