Valley Stream, NY - May 14, 2014 - Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) Detective Robert Sowers will join Nassau county law enforcement officials in a press conference today, Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 2:00pm in Valley Stream They will discuss the shooting of a Black- Crowned Night Heron in Hewlett Bay Park. An adult male while, with his family heard three or four what appeared to him to be gun shots. He looked in the driveway and observed an adult male in the driveway, holding what appeared to be a pistol in his hand and he then saw a large bird fall from the tree. He returned home to drop off his children and called 911. SPCA personnel arrived at the scene and transported the injured bird to Central Veterinary Services 73 W. Merrick Road Valley Stream, New York, a 24 hr. emergency vet in Valley Stream for medical treatment. The Nassau County SPCA has reached out to the Department Of Environmental Conservation and the US Fish & Wildlife Service because this species is protected by state & federal statues and a joint investigation has been started. The bird has undergone surgery and the SPCA is guardedly hopeful that it will recover.
