Speed limit bill amended after agreement with NYC mayor, advocates

By MATTHEW DONDIEGO
A bill allowing New York City to lower its speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph in certain areas of the five boroughs has been introduced to reflect an amended version of the legislation following an agreement reached with Mayor Bill de Blasio and traffic safety advocates.

The bill (A.8478/S.6496), sponsored by Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, originally sought to lower the limit from 30 mph to 20 mph in all areas, but the amended version will lower the limit to 25 mph. The city Department of Transportation will have the authority to lower the limit to 20 mph where they deem appropriate.
