In a turnaround quicker than a Bronx to the Battery trip during rush hour, the de Blasio administration Friday agreed to quickly expand the popular outer-borough taxi plan launched under ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
A day after Taxi & Limousine Commissioner Meera Joshi said it was "premature" to commit to issuing permits to expand the green fleet - which serve areas outside of Manhattan's central business district - the city released a statement saying that it intends to release them in late summer.
"The expansion of this service will have far-reaching effects on many constituencies," Joshi said in the statement.
Joshi had said at a City Council hearing on Thursday that the city had no time table for expansion, because they had to spend more time talking with drivers, passengers and other stakeholders about how the program was going. She also refused to commit to adding more green cabs on the road.
