IBM'S plans for E. Fishkill plant may be near

WICCOPEE – IBM Corp. is expected to tell its workers here as soon as this week about a deal that determines the fate of its semiconductor business, their jobs and perhaps the East Fishkill plant.

The deal would fulfill months of news media reports saying that IBM was in talks with potential buyers for parts of its semiconductor business, most likely GlobalFoundries, a business partner with an expanding chip plant in the Saratoga County Town of Malta.

"Employees were told they would be told something this week," said Tom Midgley, president of the Alliance@IBM workers' group.

From fellow employees he spoke with, he learned, "People were talked to and told something was going to happen and it was definitely going to affect their job," but it was unclear how.
