AirBnB to become a New York City Marathon sponsor

Dana Rubinstein

The New York Road Runners, the club that mounts the New York City Marathon every fall, sent an email today to members and marathon participants announcing a multi-year partnership with the home-rental website AirBnB.

The event, the largest marathon in the world, draws 50,000 runners, many of them from out of town and with families in tow.

A few years ago, an economic impact study conducted by the club found the event generated $65 million in revenue for the hospitality industry.

AirBnB, which allows visitors to rent apartments and houses directly from tenants or landlords, poses a threat to the city's existing hospitality industry.
