Bill would require an expiration date on sunscreen packaging

By Thomas Alston

A bill that would require sunscreen products to include an expiration date passed the Assembly and Senate, and was sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

The legislation (A.2727-b.S.6403-b), authored by Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, D-Long Beach, and Sen. David Carlucci, D-Clarkstown, is meant to ensure New Yorkers are not overexposed to the sun's UV rays, which is one of the leading causes of skin cancer in the United States.

Specifically, the bill would require sunscreen packages to include expiration dates, as most of these products have a lifespan of three to five years.
