Fatal crash renews talk of regulations

Rick Karlin

Albany

A tragic accident involving a bus carrying people headed for a tubing trip down the Hudson River has renewed calls by some members of the state's tight-knit community of river guides for more regulation of their industry.

On Saturday, a modified school bus carrying 31 customers and three employees of Lake Luzerne-based Tubby Tubes rolled over after an apparent mechanical malfunction, according to State Police. Hunter Scofield, a 15-year-old employee of Tubby Tubes, was ejected from the bus and died. The investigation was continuing on Monday.

Even though the accident that killed Scofield occurred on land, outfitters say it highlights wide gaps in the patchwork of regulations regarding companies and individuals who take paying customers down rivers.
