Paul Gibson Jr., city's first black deputy mayor, dies

ANNIE KARNI

Paul Gibson Jr., who was the city's first black deputy mayor, died Thursday night after a long illness. He was 86.

"He made history," former Mayor David Dinkins told the Daily News. "He was a fine young man and I'm sorry he's no longer with us."

Gibson was appointed deputy mayor for planning in 1974 by Mayor Abe Beame, after a long search to find an African-American to serve in one of the most senior posts at City Hall.
