EPA official: It will be 'a long time' before Onondaga Lake is safe for swimming, fishing

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The top EPA official in New York said today the cleanup of Onondaga Lake is progressing, but she could not say when the lake would be safe again for swimming and fishing.
"We're dealing with the public health threats and the ecological threats that will allow this lake to recover," Judith Enck, regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, told the Syracuse Media Group editorial board. "Onondaga Lake is a priority, but I can't answer the question of when can you safely swim or fish. It's going to be a long time."
Enck is in Syracuse to speak about climate change and the Obama administration's new rules on carbon emissions from power plants. She is scheduled to speak at a roundtable from 1:30 to 3 p.m. today in the Syracuse City Hall Commons atrium.
