Medicaid change allows reimbursement for I.U.D.s
Dan Goldberg
The state Medicaid program is now reimbursing doctors who implant IUDs after a woman gives birth, city Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett said Thursday.
The policy took effect April 1, but city and state officials were looking for ways to publicize the change, which they say could impact thousands of women.
The number is relatively small because the new policy applies only to patients who are on traditional fee-for-service Medicaid, a small and declining percentage of New Yorkers.
Health officials hope the states move will push managed care companies and private insurers to follow suit and cover the contraceptives immediately after birth.
I encourage all insurance plans, managed care, private and commercial to follow Medicaid's lead, Bassett said.
