Miner to Obama: Syracuse welcomes migrant children awaiting deportation

Tim Knauss

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Mayor Stephanie Miner wrote to President Barack Obama today to urge federal officials to establish a site in Syracuse to house immigrant children awaiting deportation.

Federal officials have explored using six buildings at the former Maria Regina College, a 10-acre campus at Court Street and Grant Boulevard, said Rochelle Cassella, speaking for the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.

The inspection was part of an initial site assessment to see if two former convents or the former Maria Regina College center may be suitable for temporarily housing an undetermined of children from Central America who are awaiting deportation hearings. The site could potentially house between 100 and 200 children, Miner told The Associated Press today.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse has passed an initial federal assessment as a potential site to house unaccompanied Central American children who are awaiting deportation hearings, said Mayor Stephanie Miner, who today urged President Barack Obama to expedite approval of a local shelter.

Miner said she was told last Friday by regional representatives of the U.S. Department of Housing and Human Services that the former Maria Regina College campus in Syracuse "had passed the initial assessment and that it was moving up to the next level for evaluation.''

Miner said she expects to hear from higher-level HHS officials soon about the next level of review.

Earlier today, the mayor sent a public letter to Obama welcoming the establishment of a site in Syracuse to help some of the thousands of unaccompanied Central American children who have crossed the border without authorization and must be housed while they await deportation.
