Stringer pushes state to ask more of Comcast

Sally Goldenberg

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer is urging the state to require better internet service, particularly for low-income New Yorkers, in exchange for its approval for a Comcast-Time Warner merger.

Stringer will submit written testimony to the New York State Public Service Commission on Monday to encourage it to press Comcast to expand and improve its broadband service, according to a five-page draft provided to Capital.

"It is critical that the PSC not only press Comcast to significantly expand the reach of Internet Essentials, but also that it engage in appropriate oversight to ensure that the company is meeting its commitments to low-income residents of the Empire State," Stringer writes.

"Internet Essentials" refers to a 2012 program Comcast launched to offer faster service at low prices for low-income families in its coverage area.
