Study looks at how kids are faring

Ben Oreskes

A study released Tuesday concerning the welfare of children showed improvement in eight categories of health and education for New York state's kids but a decline in their economic well-being.

The Kids Count Data Book found that in overall child well-being, New York ranked 28th —the lowest of any state in New England or the mid-Atlantic.

The study was released Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and disseminated by the state Council on Children and Families.

Massachusetts led the field in the well-being ranking, which combines data relating to economic circumstance, education, health and family/community.
