Teachout responds to residency challenge

ALBANY—Law professor Zephyr Teachout is refuting a court challenge to her residency, and has filed a legal countermotion to validate her place on the Democratic primary ballot challenging Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Teachout's attorney, Lawrence Mandelker—a former campaign treasurer for Ed Koch—rebuffed the Cuomo-backed challenge in a court filing, insisting that Teachout “has been a member of the [Fordham] faculty since August, 2009” and is “duly qualified to be elected to the public office of governor.”

State law requires a gubernatorial candidate to have been a state resident for five years before they can seek the office. In a court challenge filed in Brooklyn on Tuesday, attorney Marty Connor argued that Teachout has “indicia” of residence in other states, including Vermont, since 2009.
