Pride Agenda throws red flag on Giants’ hiring of Tyree

Casey Seiler, Capitol bureau chief

The Empire State Pride Agenda is objecting to the Giants’ hiring of former wide receiver David Tyree as the team’s director of player development despite his vocal opposition to same-sex marriage and his support for so-called “conversion” therapy.

“This decision has ramifications that go well beyond the field and into the stands and the millions of living rooms where the next generation of football fans and potential players take their cues from their football heroes,” The Agenda says in slightly run-on fashion. “Tyree’s hiring says to them that it’s OK to hate someone because of who they are.”

Tyree, famous for his “helmet catch” in Super Bowl XLII, came to the state Capitol in June 2011 and called on lawmakers “to reject same-sex marriage and stand up for traditional marriage, which is truly the backbone of our civilization.”
