N.Y. updates list of vaccines required for school

Claire Hughes

Parents of schoolchildren: It's a good time to check with your kids' doctors to make sure their immunizations are up to date.

For the first time in more than a decade, the state has revised its vaccine requirements for school attendance.

The changes, involving vaccines for chicken pox and polio, make New York requirements consistent with recommendations of the national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The new rules, which will be phased in over seven years, affect children entering kindergarten and sixth grade this September.

Many pediatricians already follow the ACIP guidelines when recommending vaccines that protect children from getting serious childhood illnesses, according to Louis Snitkoff, medical director of CapitalCare Medical Group. So parents who follow doctors' advice on children's vaccinations may find they are already in compliance with the new rules.

And maybe even the queen of woo, Oprah, who never really espouses a position, but who nevertheless promotes kooks, quacks (ahem, cough, John of God), quack enablers (Dr. Oz), or those who have failed in their chosen profession (Dr. "I was the worst marriage therapist on the planet" Phil, who Oprah promoted so he could have his own program which promoted him as... That's right, a marriage counselor), plus Jenny McCarthy.
