Mayor de Blasio calls for regulation of Times Square costumed characters

ERIN DURKIN

Mayor de Blasio said it’s time to regulate the Times Square characters who hit up tourists for tips dressed as Elmo, Spider-Man, and Hello Kitty.

“I think this has gone too far,” the mayor said Monday. “It’s time to take some real steps toward regulating this new reality.”

A Spider-Man was arrested over the weekend for hitting a cop, the latest in a string of aggressive incidents with the Times Square characters.
