Bill sponsors want Gov. Cuomo to speed up medical marijuana program

Jon Campbell

The sponsors of New York’s new medical-marijuana law are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to push the federal government to allow critically ill patients to receive the drug from other states before the state’s system is up and running.

Sen. Diane Savino, D-Staten Island, and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, D-Manhattan—who were the prime sponsors of the medical-marijuana bill—sent a letter to Cuomo on Saturday, urging him to take action to get the drug to epileptic children sooner. Under the new law, the state Department of Health will have to get the state’s medical-marijuana program up and running within 18 months.
