Audit: NY missed out on $425M worth of Medicaid drug rebates
ALBANY — New York is trying to recover nearly $426 million in prescription drug rebates after auditors discovered the state health department never billed for them, the state Comptroller's Office said Friday.
In 1990, Congress created the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program to reduce state and federal spending on prescription drugs for Medicaid recipients. In exchange for state Medicaid coverage of most of their drugs, manufacturers agreed to discount a portion of the cost in the form of a rebate. But states have to request them first.
An audit published Friday found that New York health officials did not take steps to ensure that drugs offered under a new managed care program were identified and processed for rebate invoicing.
"The state Health Department must keep up with new and evolving drug rebate opportunities to ensure all rebate revenue for the Medicaid program is being collected," state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said.
