New York lawmakers hold second hearing on state's handling of nursing home during coronavirus crisis
ALBANY — New York lawmakers heard from nursing home operators, employees and grieving relatives who lost loved ones Monday as they held a second hearing on the state’s handling of nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic.
Industry representatives lamented a lack of personal protective equipment at the height of the crisis and warned of growing fiscal issues at elder care facilities across the state.
“Nursing homes in April, in one of the busier weeks were going through 12 million pieces of PPE per week. That’s a lot of gloves gowns, masks, shields,” Jim Clyne with Leading Age New York, which represents more than 200 nursing homes, told lawmakers during the virtual hearing.
New York has reported nearly 6,500 nursing home deaths throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, a number many believe is low as officials don’t count resident who died in hospitals.
