New York bans underage marriages, raises age of consent to 18

New York banned underage marriages on Thursday, raising the age of consent to 18 years old.

Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the bill into law, which eliminated the previous exception of allowing 17-year-olds to get married with the consent of parents and the courts.

"This administration fought hard to successfully end child marriage in New York and I'm proud to sign this legislation to strengthen our laws and further protect vulnerable children from exploitation," Cuomo said.

"Children should be allowed to live their childhood and I thank the many legislators and advocates who worked diligently to advance this measure and further prevent forced marriages in this state," he added.

Some sects as the Satmar have arranged for marriages for girls under 17.

So ANYONE in NY could go to CT (not NJ) to marry.

I ask you to ask yourself why you felt the need to single out (fundamentalist) Jews?

Especially in your subject post? Conservative Christians certainly disapprove of being told what to do or not do, and would and do object to restrictions for marrying age. And FYI, it won't interfere with the practice of Judaism, it will discourage child marriage, which is what it was meant to do. Not just for Satmar or fundamentalist Jews!

As a Jew I was offended by your post, because child marriage is common in many fundamentalist RELIGIONS, and singling out (NY) Jews is prejudicial, in my opinion. I thought about reporting your post but decided I needed to address your comments. I don't believe you were intentionally displaying bigotry/insensitivity, but it came across as such.

2 states have a minimum age of 14: Alaska and North Carolina
3 states have a minimum age of 15.
21 states have a minimum age of 16.
10 states have a minimum age of 17.
5 states have a minimum age of 18.
From 2017[41][42] to 2020,[43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50] [51][52][53] several states changed their law to set a minimum age, to raise their minimum age, or to make more stringent the conditions under which an underage marriage may occur.

of their faith. This isn't a 15 yo in Arkansas running off to get married because s/he doesn't want to live with their family anymore. I'm thinking about the concentration of fundamentalist sects of Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Monsey, NY. They will find this law to limit their ability for growing their families.

What are some of the rights I have at 18 that I didn’t have before?
• You have the right to vote in national, state and local elections.
• You have the right to run for local and certain state political offices.
• You have the right to enter into a contract.
• You have the right to make a will.
• You have the right to obtain medical treatment without the consent of your parents.
• You have the right to apply for credit in your own name.
• You have the right to work in all types of jobs.
• You have the right to live independently from your parents and be free of their control.
