Citing stricture on gays marching openly, de Blasio will not march in St. Patrick's Parade on Sunday

Citing stricture on gays marching openly, de Blasio will not march in Staten Island St. Patrick's Parade on Sunday
Tom Wrobleski/Staten Island Advance

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Standing with members of Staten Island's LGBT community, Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio will not march in the borough's St. Patrick's Parade on Sunday.

Mayoral spokesman Phil Walzak said that de Blasio would not march because the Island parade prohibits gays from marching openly under banners or otherwise identifying themselves as gay.

Walzak said de Blasio's decision was in keeping with his stance that he would not march in parades that "exclude groups."

"That's the case here," he said.
