Rockland considers creating its own water authority

Laura Incalcaterra, TJN
A Rockland lawmaker and frequent critic of United Water New York is seeking input from residents about whether the county should create its own authority to manage its supply.

Ramapo town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence says the water company has failed its local customers – charging too much and ignoring residents' desires to avoid a new multimillion dollar water treatment plant.

"United Water is not doing a good job," St. Lawrence said. "Why are we fighting about our own water? We have riparian rights. All the water we use is within Rockland County."

He's holding a public input session at 8 p.m. Thursday at Ramapo Town Hall in Airmont to start the process and said a not-for-profit water authority would take a comprehensive look at the county's supply and how best to use it.
