Council members demand restoration of homelessness prevention funds

They've resolved to house the homeless.

The city would demand that the state restore the funds to pay rent for thousands of needy New Yorkers under a resolution introduced Wednesday by City Councilman Ruben Wills.

Wills (D-Jamaica) and five co-sponsors want to bring back subsidies like the Advantage program, which provided temporary rental assistance and was scrapped by Mayor Bloomberg in 2011, after state lawmakers axed its reimbursement.

The non-binding Council bill would seek to hold the governor and state lawmakers accountable for a budget cut that has filled Jamaica’s many shelters, advocates say.
