State seals deal with HIV drugmaker, sets goal for 2020

Claire Hughes

The state has negotiated a deal with Gilead, the largest maker of retroviral drugs to treat HIV, in a step towards expanding the number of New Yorkers who receive medications to treat the virus that causes AIDS, state Commissioner Nirav R. Shah said Tuesday.

The move is one step toward a plan to reduce the number of New Yorkers newly diagnosed with HIV from an estimated 3,400 in 2012 to under 730 by 2020, a goal Shah announced to 300-400 cheering anti-AIDS activists at the Legislative Office Building. Now that the deal with Gilead has been sealed, the state may be ready within the next month to disclose the details of its full plan to reach that goal, Shah said.
