Caucus urges Silver to press Cuomo for school aid

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—A caucus representing lawmakers of color says money that Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed to devote to tax cuts should be used to increase education funding.

“The underfunding that persists in our schools has made significant cuts to educational opportunities,” reads a letter signed by nineteen legislators including Assemblyman Karim Camara, chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus. “We are respectfully requesting on behalf of our communities that we enter budget negotiations with the objective of securing an additional $300 million in foundation aid above and beyond what is contained in the Assembly one-house budget bill.”
