Cuomo Says Some Lawmakers Want It Both Ways On Abortion

Women’s groups pushing for a 10-point agenda that includes a controversial abortion plank are frustrated with state lawmakers who express support for abortion rights, but don’t follow through, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a radio interview this morning.

“Many of these legislators have told them they’re pro-choice,” Cuomo said on The Capitol Pressroom. “That’s what irks them.”

The women’s agenda Cuomo introduced last week includes a variety of measures designed to curb discrimination in housing and the workplace, along with a component aimed at strengthening abortion rights through a codification of Roe v. Wade.

Senate Republican Leader Dean Seklos, however, has called the move an expansion of existing rights and will not allow a floor vote on the legislation, prompting pressure from advocacy groups to be applied to the four-member Independent Democratic Conference, now in a power-sharing agreement with the GOP, who are technically outnumbered in the chamber.

This is not, in reality, taking away from any of anyone else's actual Rights.

3. Government is sorely lacking female and progressive representation.

By no means is just being female the answer - plenty of far right women (who will faithfully vote against women's interests) out there, but we're not going to fix anything until we've got truly progressive representation.

Few progressive men are afraid enough of women to claim confusion regarding women's issues, so that's a good start, but we've got to vote some progressive women into office too.

We need to do some damage in NY, VA, NC and a buttload of other states over the next two elections. The crap that's going on in those states is terrifying.
