1,600 'Moral Monday' demonstrators gather at General Assembly
RALEIGH, N.C. -
Around 1,600 demonstrators gathered outside the North Carolina General Assembly Monday for a mass pray-in, sing-in and teach-in against what demonstrators call "the extreme agenda of the state leadership."
The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP returned to the North Carolina General Assembly, continuing its "Moral Monday" push to protest moves by the Republican-led legislature.
The civil rights group resumed its weekly demonstrations Monday after taking last week to hold a statewide tour with public events.
"I'm very hopeful that we the people can make some real changes happen," said Adam Sotak.
Around 140 people were arrested, police said, adding to the more than 150 people arrested so far during previous Moral Monday demonstrations.
Hundreds more waited outside to cheer on those arrested as they were transported to a detention facility.

A friend of mine attended today and she said it was really inspiring. She said it relieved her anxiety to see that there are tons of compassionate, sane people in this state. Greenpeace was there too!
