RALEIGH, N.C.
North Carolina General Assembly members have been subpoenaed for documents by those challenging the law creating new voting restrictions. But lawmakers argue they shouldnt have to comply.
House Speaker Thom Tillis, Senate leader Phil Berger and other lawmakers involved in the 2013 elections law asked a federal court this month to block the subpoenas.
Civil rights groups and voters sued last summer to overturn portions of the law requiring photo identification to vote, fewer days for early voting and other changes.
They asked the legislators last month to provide them with documents and communications related to how the legislation was developed. The lawmakers lawyers cite a doctrine called legislative immunity in saying they arent obligated to comply.
