No clear signs of a blue wave in NC

No clear signs of a blue wave in NC – early voting patterns look a lot like 2014

North Carolinians are turning in their ballots at about the same pace as during the 2014 midterm elections.

By the end of the first week of early voting, elections officials had accepted 716,463 ballots — about 10 percent of registered voters. That includes ballots cast in person at an early-voting site and those sent in by mail.

The number is slightly lower than at the close of the first week of early voting in 2014, when 735,205 ballots had been accepted.

There are a couple of important differences between the midterm elections in 2014 and 2018. This year is a “blue moon” election, which means there are no major statewide races to draw voters out to the polls. In 2014, there was a U.S. Senate race. But this year, voters will consider six constitutional amendments, which some pundits predicted would boost turnout. Another difference is that there were significantly fewer days of early voting in 2014.

North Carolina voters are decidedly fired up to cast ballots in the 2018 mid-term election. Days ago, early voting totals surpassed the 2014 mid-term numbers ...

Whether it's to show approval or opposition to President Donald Trump or the contentious Constitutional Amendments on the ballot, whatever is fueling the voter surge could lead to North Carolina's highest voter turnout in a non-presidential year in decades ...

But this year's a 'blue moon' election -- that's when there's no statewide races on the ballot. It's the first since 2006 ...

RALEIGH — State election officials said more than 2 million voters had cast ballots early, according to incomplete results late Saturday afternoon.

The tally represents a 73 percent increase over 2014 early voting totals, when 1,174,184 voters cast their ballot early, Patrick Gannon, public information officer for the State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement, said in a news release.

That’s a turnout rate of 28.6 percent so far. By comparison, final turnout in 2014 (including Election Day), was 44.4 percent, Gannon said.

Final early voting numbers are expected to be released later Saturday as some counties have not reported final numbers yet ...

We've had a strong ground game where I am. Looking like it's working. I really appreciate your input. All really good news for now.

We've got to get through Tuesday. Meanwhile, we hope for the best and then wait for the final count. Thanks again.
