Strike at Libbey enters its 10th day

The strike at Libbey Inc.’s Toledo glass factory will enter its 10th day today, as the company has yet to reach a new contract agreement with the four local unions that represent its Toledo-area workers.

Libbey, which is headquartered in downtown Toledo, said a week ago it had presented the unions with its final offer, though the two sides have continued to meet at the bargaining table. That proposal, the company said, would maintain job levels, provide a 4.5 percent raise over three years, freeze health-care contributions for two years, and change work rules to address absenteeism.

Libbey says it has about 750 hourly workers in the Toledo area, split among the table glass factory and distribution centers in Toledo and Perrysburg. The bulk of those employees are represented by the United Steelworkers, though the two Steelworkers-affiliated locals have not taken strike votes. The Glass Molders Plastics Local 59 and International Association of Machinists Lodge 105 have been striking since Oct. 12. The Steelworkers members have not crossed the picket lines and are not reporting to work.

The company and unions have had little to say about negotiations over the last couple of days.
