Richard Cordray and Betty Sutton announce joint Ohio gubernatorial ticket

AKRON, Ohio - Democrats Richard Cordray, the ex-director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton announced Wednesday that they - like the top two Republicans - will join together on a single ticket in the race to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. John Kasich.

Cordray will remain the candidate for governor while Sutton will drop out of the race to serve as his running mate. The Cordray-Sutton ticket does for Democrats what the political marriage of Attorney General Mike DeWine and Secretary of State Jon Husted did for Republicans: provide a top-tier ticket meant to unite the base through what could be a grueling primary process.

Cordray and Sutton were at the top of the Democratic field before they announced the ticket.

"This is just our first step to building a larger team that will be a leadership team for the future of Ohio," Cordray said at a diner in Akron. "It will not just be Betty and me, but others who will join us to fulfill the high expectations of all Ohioans."
