Sweep! Sherrod Brown has been endorsed by every major newspaper. No mention of how creepy Josh Mandel has been, but, I'm happy.
Terse excerpt:
Brown, 59, has been an accessible and tireless advocate for Ohio, including central Ohio.
Brown has been helpful in improving the road connections around the Rickenbacker Intermodal Facility and in fixing a glitch in the federal health-care overhaul that would have denied Nationwide Childrens Hospital a federal discount on 347 drugs needed to treat seriously ill children. While his opposition to free trade is misguided, he has been a vigorous defender and promoter of Ohio businesses trying to gain a foothold in overseas markets. For example, he went to bat for a Hilliard pipe manufacturer after Mexico tried to exclude the companys products. Brown also has been part of bipartisan efforts to stop the Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes.

The first comment by Mr. Scott:
Somewhere, water is flowing uphill. The Browns are getting ready for the Super Bowl. And Josh Mandel, if he has a shred of sense, is preparing his concession speech. Not that Ohioans shouldn't be doing all in their power to be sure Sherrod Brown is re-elected, but I've been reading this paper for a depressingly long time. And I have never seen the Dispatch endorse a Democrat for federal office. (Did they pick John Glenn over Betts or Perk? Not sure, but I wouldnt bet on it.) I suspect that the discussions at high levels were heated, to say the least -- Mr. Sheller's editorial page often reflects an extreme-right and bitterly partisan worldview that is out of touch with most Dispatch readers. But my hat is off to Mr Wolfe as publisher. Given a clearly superior candidate in Senator Brown opposing a man who really is not qualified to be a US senator, Mr. Wolfe joined other major papers in Ohio and did the right thing. I hope to see more steps towards this being a less extreme and less partisan newspaper.

(5 posts)Turns out the Dispatch did endorse national hero and Democrat John Glenn over GOP cannon fodder James Betts in the 1980 US Senate race. But Glenn's race aside, I don't believe the Dispatch had endorsed a Democrat for any federal office in the last fifty years. For sheer incompetence, Ken Blackwell's sleazy 2006 campaign for governor set a standard that will be hard to match, but if Ohio erects a Political Hall of Shame, Mandel at least deserves an Honorable Mention.
