Athens (Ohio) City Council votes in support of abolishing corporate personhood
Athens City Council chambers erupted in loud cheers and applause Monday evening as Council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution calling for the abolishing of corporate constitutional rights.
Its a seemingly small step for a small community to take in a battle this big, but its one we cannot afford to lose in the long run, said John Howell, a member of the local group Democracy Over Corporations. If we want a country thats a democracy in the way we understand it, we cannot afford to give our children a world thats run by the corporate bottom line.
The one-reading resolution was introduced by new Councilman Jeff Risner in January and is in response to the 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which said that corporations are people in regard to the right to free speech, and there is no limit as to what they can spend on political campaigns.
