Portland police helmets to have prominent 3-digit numbers for protests

Portland police officers assigned to protests will soon be wearing helmets with three-digit numbers prominently stenciled onto them, the Portland Police Bureau said Friday night.

The bureau’s decision came after members of the public complained it was difficult to identify officers during protests because of the small personal identification numbers on officers’ uniforms, especially in the dark and during chaotic moments.

The stenciling of the helmets will begin immediately and PPB said all helmets will be stenciled by Nov.15.

The bureau said officers began wearing personal identification numbers instead of nametags over concerns for their safety if their addresses and telephone numbers were published online, known as doxxing.
