Colorado man pleads guilty to stabbing Black man in eastern Oregon hate crime
A Colorado man who stabbed a Black man in the neck because of the victims race pleaded guilty Thursday in Eugene to a federal hate crime and could face life in prison, prosecutors said.
Nolan Levi Strauss, 27, pleaded guilty to a hate crime with intent to kill, said Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division.
The defendant is being held accountable for his vicious, racially motivated attack on a Black man who was targeted because of the color of his skin, Clark said in a statement. Racially motivated acts of violence must not be tolerated in our country today.
Court documents say that, on Dec. 21, 2019, the 48-year-old victim was in Ontario, Oregon, waiting in the lobby of an Arbys restaurant, where he was applying for a job.
