Pennsylvania warns 360,000 school employee files compromised

More than 360,000 Pennsylvania public school employees and retirees may be at risk for identity theft after their addresses, names and Social Security numbers were improperly posted on a state website.

The personal data of tens of thousands of current and former school employees was temporarily posted on the little known, rarely used website Pennsylvania Information Management System, a clearing house of educational statistics.

On Monday, officials said it would cost about $640,000 to provide credit monitoring and protection services to an estimated 360,000 current and former workers.

The improper posting occurred four weeks ago, officials said. Letters of notice and offers of free credit monitoring will be mailed to everyone affected, said Nicole Reigelman, press secretary for the Department of Education.
