PA Senate leaders chose church over clergy sex abuse victims

After the state Senate couldn't move a bill to aid clergy sex abuse victims, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Senate Republican leaders have the wrong priorities.

"Senate leaders prioritized the church over the victims," Shapiro said at a Capitol press conference late Wednesday night. "They let the institution that enabled the rape and abuse of thousands of children off the hook."

The bill stalled Wednesday after Senate GOP leaders pushed a plan that would have allowed child sex abuse victims a limited window to sue in cases that went beyond the statutes of limitations.

But the plan had a caveat: victims wouldn't be able to sue institutions, including the Catholic Church.

6. Not a smart move at all

The GOP holds big numbers advantages over Dems in the state house and state senate, but there's a lot of anger over the church abuse grand jury findings. Voters have taken things like the "midnight pay raise" out, electorially, on incumbents before. This might that kind of issue that just results in Pennsylvanians deciding to "vote them out" and cost the Rs seats they might otherwise be expected to hold. For the first time in awhile Dems are contesting every house and senate seat so there will be a choice for voters.
