State Democrats drafting plan for diversity among its delegates

After an hour of hearing officials from the Pennsylvania Democratic Party lay out their strategy for sending delegates to the national convention in 2020, Allison Stein pointed out an uncomfortable reality regarding the nomination of a presidential candidate.

“We have a unique situation,” said Ms. Stein, a Fox Chapel Democrat who chaired Betsy Monroe’s state House campaign last year. “Twenty candidates for 2020. I’m new to this process, but ... how ...”

She paused.

“It’s an onerous process to become a delegate. Let’s say 15 are still around. That’s a whole lot.”

The party officials shot back: sure, it could get complicated, but with so many candidates — all of whom are strong in unique ways — it’ll be the team that “wants it more” that ends up in Milwaukee at the Democratic National Convention next year. It’s up to the aspiring delegates to find a presidential candidate, volunteer for their campaigns and get a little bit lucky with the results.
