Rare prototype Star Wars action figure sells for record six figure price at Pa. auction house

Boba Fett may be the most feared bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away, but he’s worth a fair amount of credits himself.

Hake’s Auctions in York put out a press release stating that their recent sale of an action figure of the Star Wars character set a new world record. The figure, a Kenner Star Wars Boba Fett prototype (complete with rocket launcher), made in 1979, drew in 27 bids before closing at $204,435 on March 16.

The previous record for an auction sale of the Star Wars prototype action figure was set in 2019, also by Hake’s, with a “Near-Mint” condition Boba Fett figure. That rating was even higher than the figure in last night’s sale, which was rated as being in “Very Good” condition.

It’s unsurprising that Boba Fett was the one that set the new record for Star Wars figures. The laconic character struck a chord with fans ever since his first appearance in 1978, and his action figure was a hot commodity even before his big-screen debut in “The Empire Strikes Back” in 1980. The character has also gotten the spotlight recently in the Disney Plus series “The Book of Boba Fett.”

I got one - you had to send in box tops or something for it. They were supposed to have a rocket that shot out his backpack, but they realized that kids would poke their eyes out with it, so the final version didn’t have the rocket. I was so disappointed as a kid. A few prototypes with the rocket leaked out and those are the ones that fetch such money.

You can sell garbage if it's the only one around. Literally. Things that everyone else threw away instantly are rare as can be.

Not in great shape though. The Skywalker light saber slides out from the forearm. I should pull them out of the box they are in.
